The truth is that the more you allow someone or something to do the work for you, the weaker and more dependent you become in that area. I’m grateful that I did the core of my education before computers, even spell check, since it required that I memorize the fundamentals of knowledge, reading, and writing. I can go to a library that uses index cards and the Dewey Decimal System and find my sources. I can write an essay with an intro, body, conclusion, and bibliography (with legit scholarly sources). Why? Because my teachers made me learn those skills, personally. This professor condemning AI-assists is spot on in my experience. I laud his bravery, fortitude, and wisdom. If you learn English his way, you can do all your reading, reasoning, and writing even if your computer dies or the electricity goes out. That is true empowerment and improvement. The alternative may be more convenient, but it’s also more enslaving.
